Milan and Florence are about 310 km apart. The high-speed train on this route is among the best in Italy, but a car is more convenient if you want to stop in Bologna or Tuscany, or are traveling with a lot of luggage.
How Long It Takes and What to Know About the Center
By car the trip takes around 3 to 3.5 hours. A limited traffic zone (ZTL) covers Florence’s historic center, so plan the route to your hotel in advance if you are driving a rental car.
Transportation: What to Choose?
The fastest trains run from Milan to Firenze Santa Maria Novella in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Booked early, tickets can start at roughly €15–20.
Handy if you are continuing around Tuscany. Allow for motorway tolls, fuel and parking outside the ZTL.
A good fit for groups, or if you would rather not think about luggage and the ZTL. The driver collects you from your door. An economy car from central Milan starts from €490 per vehicle, depending on the exact address.
- Fixed price agreed in advance
- Pickup at your address
- Choice of vehicle, from Economy to V-Class
- No changes and no hauling luggage
What to Consider on the Way to Florence
Firenze Santa Maria Novella station is next to the historic center, so many hotels are a walk or short taxi ride away. Both Trenitalia and Italo run on this route, so compare prices from each.
If your hotel is inside the ZTL and you are driving, ask the hotel in advance how to approach it and whether it needs your license plate. A car also gives you more freedom if you want to stop in Bologna on the way.
