Milan and Venice are about 280 km apart, and many visitors combine them on a trip through northern Italy. Venice has one important catch: cars cannot enter the historic center, so plan in advance how you will reach your hotel.
How Long It Takes and Where the Road Ends
By car the trip takes around 3 hours without stops or traffic. Cars can go as far as Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. Beyond that, people get around on foot, by vaporetto or by water taxi.
Transportation: What to Choose?
Direct Frecciarossa trains run from Milano Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia in about 2 hours 30 minutes. Booked early, tickets can start at around €25, and prices rise closer to the date.
Useful if you want to stop in Verona or at Lake Garda on the way. Allow for motorway tolls, fuel and parking at the edge of Venice.
Convenient for families or groups with luggage: the driver picks you up at your door in Milan and takes you to Piazzale Roma, where vaporetti and water taxis continue to the hotels. An economy car from central Milan starts from €440 per vehicle.
- Fixed price agreed in advance
- Pickup at your address
- Choice of vehicle, from Economy to V-Class
- No changes and no hauling luggage
Getting from Piazzale Roma to Your Hotel
Piazzale Roma is at the entrance to the historic city. From here you can take a vaporetto along the Grand Canal, a water taxi, or walk. A water taxi is easier with luggage but costs considerably more than a vaporetto.
Venice has many stepped bridges, so check the route to your hotel if you have suitcases. If you are staying in Mestre, a car can take you right to the address. On the train, check whether your ticket ends at Venezia Mestre or Venezia Santa Lucia.
